FOREST HILLS, QUEENS — The controversial Forest Hills High School principal resigned Monday after months of complaints that he failed to enforce rules on drug use and enabled general disorder at the school, the New York Post reports.

Principal Ben Sherman wrote to staffers Monday announcing his resignation, according to the Post. The news comes days before staffers planned to protest at the school to demand his removal.

"While I love Forest Hills very much, I must inform you with a heavy heart that I have decided to transition to another role," he wrote.

Sherman will move to the Department of Education's Manhattan headquarters, according to the Post, where he will work in the Office of the First Deputy Chancellor.

Teachers and parents had lambasted Sherman, who joined the school in 2017, for failing to punish students caught using marijuana in school.

"I’m ecstatic," teacher Jim Hogue told the Post. "Forest Hills High School has always been a blue ribbon school. Under Principal Sherman the school was clearly careening down a path to destruction.”

Administrator Sean Davenport will be in charge of the school until a new principal is named, according to the Post.
