FOREST HILLS, QUEENS — The number of people and businesses forced to leave their Forest Hills or Rego Park residence is climbing this year after the eviction moratorium expired at the start of the year.
At least 20 households and businesses have been evicted in Forest Hills and Rego Park since Jan. 16, when the moratorium expired, a steady climb from 7 evictions last year, according to data kept by the Department of Investigation.
The data shows that seven commercial tenants and 13 households have been evicted this year in the two neighborhoods.

Evictions started to climb at the beginning of the year, with the volume of eviction filing spiking from last year. The number of evictions is likely higher since it’s common for marshals to report evictions weeks after execution.
Queens is ranked the fourth county with the largest number of eviction filings in the state, following the Bronx, Kings, and Manhattan.

Queens has registered more than 15,700 eviction filings this year, according to government data. That’s more than double the over 7,000 filings the county registered last year.
