QUEENS, NY — A homeless man was arrested Monday in connection with an attempted sexual assault this weekend in Forest Park, according to police.

Cuauhtemoc Cardenas, 32, faces charges of attempted rape, strangulation and assault for the attack Saturday evening on Forest Park's Orange Trail, the NYPD said in a news release.

A 51-year-old woman was walking along the trail about 6:30 p.m. when a man came up behind her, hit her in the head and pushed her into the bushes, according to police.

The man wrapped a piece of clothing around the woman's neck and choked her while attempting to sexually assault her, but she fought back and called out for help, causing him to run off.

Police officers tracked him down Monday in Queens based on a tip, a spokesperson said.
