Mother, 22, Killed By Her Son's Father In Kew Gardens Crash: NYPD

The mother was in the backseat of a car with her 3-year-old son when the child's father, who was behind the wheel, crashed into another car.

KEW GARDENS, QUEENS — Daniel Aguirre, 21, was driving his son, 3, and the mother of his child, 22, through Kew Gardens on Sunday night when he crashed head-on into another car; killing the young woman, according to the NYPD and other reports.

Around 11:06 p.m. on Sunday, Aguirre was driving a Toyota Corolla west on Park Lane South near Mayfield Road when he veered into the eastbound lane and hit a Toyota Camry, police said, adding that the 21-year-old might have been driving while intoxicated.

The crash killed Maria Fernanda, who was in the backseat of the car with her son, records show. ABC reported that she was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

The boy, as well as the 44-year-old Camry driver — who stayed at the scene after the accident — were both taken to the hospital in stable condition, police said.

Aguirre, however, was taken into custody, and is facing two charges of driving while intoxicated, as well as a manslaughter charge, the NYPD announced on Monday. The NYPD's Highway Collision Investigation Squad is still investigating the incident, too.
