NAVY YARD, BROOKLYN — A 74,000-square-foot Wegmans supermarket planned for the Brooklyn Navy Yard will swallow the entire first floor of a new five-story building at 21 Flushing Ave., according to architect renderings and plans filed this week with the city.

In addition, the new building, around 250,000 square feet in total, will be supplemented by 246 parking spaces, according to the filings.
The compound is expected to open in 2017.

The site is known — especially among ruin enthusiasts — for its abandoned yet stately Civil War-era buildings, which used to house officers from the U.S. Navy.
To make room for the project, nearly all of those urban ruins will be demolished.
Guess it's groceries over ghosts in Brooklyn these days.
Out-of-work Brooklynites also stand to gain.
The popular supermarket chain will be moving into the city at a time when local favorite Fairway is struggling to stay afloat. Fairway filed for bankruptcy earlier this year, setting both employees and customers on edge.
Wegmans, on the other hand, has said its first New York City outpost will initially employ 450 workers, of which 150 will be full-time — although that number could grow to 250 in the future.
The company said it will focus on hiring local residents. And under an agreement with the city, all jobs created as part of the Navy Yard's redevelopment must pay at least a living wage, currently defined as $11.50 per hour if an employee gets health benefits, and $13.13 per hour if not.
