82-Year-Old Man Injured In Hit-And-Run: Garden City Police

GARDEN CITY, NY — The Garden City Police Department reported the following incidents for the week ending Sept. 14.

Sept. 8

  • Officers responded to Hilton Avenue and Stewart Avenue where a vehicle left the scene after striking and injuring an 82-year-old pedestrian who was crossing the street. The pedestrian suffered a leg injury and was transported to a local hospital. Garden City detectives located the vehicle and 67-year-old male driver in Long Beach. He was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of an accident with an injury.
  • Officers responded to Cherry Valley Avenue where a truck struck the train trestle, then backed up, striking another vehicle which then struck a third vehicle. No injuries were reported. The truck driver was charged with disregarding bridge clearance signs and failure to cover loose cargo.
  • A motorist was observed on Cherry Valley Avenue entering the Middle School while disregarding a “Do Not Enter” sign. He was charged with driving with a suspended license, fraudulent license plates, and disregarding a traffic sign.
  • A motorist on Washington Avenue was charged with driving with a suspended license and excessive speed.
  • A victim’s identity was stolen and used to file false unemployment claims.
  • Officers investigated a report of a woman trespassing in the rear yard of a Prescott Street home.

  • A driver on Hilton Avenue was charged with passing a red light, fraudulent license plates, and unregistered operation.
  • A victim reported he was a victim of a cyber-attack. The victim said when he never received an item he ordered online, he called the alleged seller who advised him to download an app to help him attain a refund. After downloading the app, the victim realized someone was going through his computer files.

Sept. 10

  • A 45-year-old man was arrested for entering his ex-girlfriend’s home without permission and in violation of a stay-away court order. He was charged with criminal trespass and criminal contempt.
  • An man was seen on security cameras stealing an item from a 2nd Street porch and checking car door handles in the driveway.
  • An man was seen on security cameras trespassing on a Franklin Court property.
  • A driver on Old Country Road was charged with driving with a suspended license and passing a stopped school bus.
  • A motorist on Rockaway Avenue was charged with driving with a suspended license and speeding in a school zone.
  • Police and fire fighters responded to a Franklin Avenue building for a sparking electrical outlet. Firefighters safeguarded the scene until it could be repaired.
  • Someone attempted to use a victim’s identity to open multiple credit card accounts.

  • A woman reported there were several charges made against her credit cards. Upon investigation, it appears her wallet was stolen from her pocketbook while shopping in another town.
  • A driver on Clinton Road was charged with driving with a suspended registration and excessive speed.
  • A driver on Clinton Road and Chestnut Street was charged with driving with a suspended registration and tinted windows.

Sept. 12

  • Officers responded to a railroad gate malfunction at the Hilton Avenue crossing.
  • A man said that on Sept. 2, he discovered his laptop computer stolen from his vehicle while it was parked at the Cherry Valley Country Club.
  • A driver on St. James Street North was charged with driving with a suspended registration.

Sept. 13

  • A Hayes Street resident reported someone damaged his front screen door and a wreath hanger.
  • Police investigated a report of a victim’s identity being used to open an unauthorized credit card account with subsequent purchases made against the card.
  • A driver on Rockaway Avenue was charged with fraudulent license plates and speeding in a school zone.
  • Police investigated the illegal placement of advertisement stickers on village street light polls.
  • Officers investigated a report of a vehicle leaving the scene after colliding into another vehicle on Franklin Avenue.
  • Police and firefighters responded to a Clinch Avenue residence for an oven fire. Firefighters determined the cause was an electrical issue and rendered the area safe.

Sept. 14

  • Officers responded to a Franklin Avenue business to investigate a report of threatening phone calls.
