Adelphi Student Transported to Winthrop With Breathing Issues

Symptoms could be related to Monday's hazmat incident in the university's science building.

An Adelphi University student was transported via ambulance this morning to Winthrop-University Hospital after complaining of breathing issues possibly related to yesterday's hazmat incident in the university's science building.

According to an Adelphi official, the female student went to campus Health Services at 8 a.m. Tuesday and "as a precaution" was taken to the hospital.

Garden City police commissioner Kenneth Jackson confirmed police were called back to the scene this morning and the female is the same student transported to the hospital Monday afternoon after the building was evacuated at approximately 1 p.m.

University officials told Patch that the Department of Public Safety received a call from an Adelphi professor who stated that during a class in the science building there had been a hazardous material incident.

The Garden City Fire Department and Nassau County Fire Marshal's office responded to the scene.

At approximately 2:30 p.m. the fire marshal's Hazmat Unit determined that the incident had been properly cleared, university officials told Patch, and that all occupants could return to the building.

The Nassau County Hazmat Unit took multiple readings inside the building and determined the air quality to be safe, Adelphi officials said. As a precaution, however, the university closed the building at 4:45 p.m. Monday "to allow for additional ventilation." Evening classes were either rescheduled or held in other buildings.

The science building remained open for classes and normal operations Tuesday.
