Bird Sanctuary's Second Annual 'EarthFest' This Sunday
A slab of a red oak tree the village donated to the bird sanctuary after it was toppled by superstorm Sandy will be dedicated as a remembrance.

The Garden City Bird Sanctuary is hosting its second annual Earth Run and Festival Sunday beginning at 10 a.m.
The event consists of a 5K Run and a 1.5 mile Obstacle Course Run. The race route will begin in the vicinity of the Bird Sanctuary on Greenridge Avenue south to Hathaway Drive, continuing east on Fenimore Avenue, north to Kenmore Road, west to Colonial Avenue, ending in Greenridge Park.
For the safety of race participants, as well as spectators, all streets within and around the race route will be closed to vehicular traffic, according to the Garden City Police Department. Police are asking residents in the affected areas to "make arrangements" because they won't be able to drive their vehicles to and from their homes during the race.
The event is a day to recognize the value of volunteers to the community and the environment, according to Rob Alvey, bird sanctuary founder. Live music with Acoustic Dave, food, displays and tours will all be offered.
The 2013 Environmental Stewardship Award will also be presented to Dean Della Hudson of Adelphi University and the sixth grade environmental essay contest winner will be recognized. Dedication of a new "Sunny Natives Garden" and the start of an exercise trail are also on tap.
A slab of a red oak tree the village donated to the bird sanctuary after it was toppled by October's superstorm will also be dedicated as a remembrance during the Earthfest celebration.
"Sandy will not be forgotten," said Rob Alvey, sanctuary founder.
