Concerned Resident Thwarts Apparent Suicide Attempt at Train Station
New Hyde Park Road resident immediately alerts police after seeing man acting "despondent."

A New Hyde Park Road resident witnessed a man acting "despondent" at the Stewart Manor train station April 23 and immediately called Garden City Police, who were able to talk the man down from an apparent suicide attempt, according to police commissioner Kenneth Jackson.
The aided, a 64-year-old male, was contemplating taking his life by jumping in front of a moving train.
Trustee Andrew Cavanaugh praised the anonymous resident's efforts to notify authorities. "I think this speaks about two very important things. First of all, it's the efficiency and understanding of our police force ... they were alerted obviously by a resident to the fact that this gentleman was at the station and was acting in a way that gave concern. I think that also speaks to the spirit of Garden City that residents are there to see but to also care.
"I commend whoever it was who brought this to the attention of the police," he added. "It's a perfect example of our village operating and working as it should."
Jackson said the aided was taken via ambulance to a nearby hospital for evaluation.
