A round-up of crime stories in communities surrounding Garden City.

The following information was supplied by the Rockville Centre Police Department. and the Nassau County Police Department. A criminal charge is only an accusation, and does not indicate convictions.

West Hempstead

  • At least two people were injured following a two-vehicle collision in West Hempstead Monday afternoon. The incident occurred at the intersection of Hempstead Turnpike and Walnut Street. According to witnesses, one SUV ended up on the sidewalk on the north side of the road, which the second car careened just short of a beverage store on the south side of the road. West Hempstead firefighters and EMS personnel were on scene along with Nassau County police and EMS. Traffic along Hempstead Turnpike had to be diverted to side street while the area was cleared.
  • A West Hempstead man was arrested and charged Sunday night for driving while intoxicated with a child in his vehicle. According to detectives, Hempstead Village Police observed a 2005 Ford pick-up truck traveling westbound on Front Street in a reckless manner. Police were able to conduct a safe stop of the vehicle in Hempstead and noticed that the driver’s 8-year-old daughter was seated in the rear section of the vehicle. A police investigation led to the arrest of James Chadderton, 51, of West Hempstead. The daughter was released to the mother, who responded to the scene. There were no reported injuries. Chadderton was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated under Leandra’s Law, which makes it a felony to drive drunk with a child under 15 in the car. He was also charged with second-degree endangering the welfare of a child, second-degree criminal contempt, driving while intoxicated and failure to stay in a single Lane.
  • A West Hempstead man was arrested on charges he forcibly touched a female in the Nassau Coliseum parking lot after a recent Islanders game. According to detectives, a 21-year-old victim was standing outside the Uniondale-based Coliseum with friends when Craig Stanley, 54, allegedly approached the group and proceeded to touch the victim in an inappropriate manner. Stanley was charged with forcible touching and is scheduled to appear March 19 at First District Court in Hempstead.
  • Nassau County police officers arrested a West Hempstead spa worker for prostitution March 5, bringing the arrest total to 11 for 2013. According to detectives, an undercover operation determined that 52-year-old Peili Zheng, of Flushing, practiced massage therapy without a license while working at Shunyuan Spa, 357 Hempstead Turnpike, Suite 203. Police say Zheng also offered to engage in a sexual act for an undisclosed amount of money. Zheng is charged with unauthorized practice of a crime and prostitution. The arrest marks the second trip police have made to Shunyuan this year. Two employees were arrested in January for unlicensed operation, one of whom was also charged with prostitution. Two Flushing women were also arrested for prostitution in late February at Lucy Day Spa, just down the road from Shunyuan at 300 Hempstead Turnpike.

Mineola
  • An Elmont man employed as a case worker for troubled teenagers at Mineola non-profit Family and Children’s Association was arrested this month on charges of stealing more than $25,000 in Medicaid funds, according to the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office.

Rockville Centre
  • On Feb. 28 at 1:10 p.m., a complainant from S. Park Avenue in Rockville Centre reported that at approximately 11:10 a.m. an unknown person called pretending to be a supposed arrested grandson needing $1,800 for a lawyer.
  • On March 2 at 12:40 p.m., a complainant from Stratford Road in Rockville Centre reported that an unknown male caller requested $2,000 payment to release a brother that does not exist.
  • On March 5 at 9:34 a.m., a complainant from Lincoln Avenue in Rockville Centre reported that an unknown male called her cell phone and demanded payment of $1,000 to release her brother who was in no apparent danger.
  • On March 4 at 10:54 p.m., Mario Mency, 43, of Rockville Centre was arrested for assault in the first degree following an investigation by police personnel at TGI Fridays, located at 716 Sunrise Highway in Rockville Centre.
  • On March 3 at 3:07 p.m., a complainant from Rockville Centre reported that she was approached by an acquaintance regarding an ongoing dispute and Facebook postings between their daughters.
