Driver Arrested After Fiery Crash: Garden City Police

GARDEN CITY, NY — The Garden City Police Department reported the following incidents for the week ending March 29.
March 23
- Officers responded to North Avenue where a southbound vehicle on Whitehall Boulevard crashed into street bollards, trees and the train tracks. The driver was able to escape the vehicle before it burst into flames. Firefighters responded and extinguished the fire. The 19-year-old driver was treated by NYU Medics for minor injuries. He was subsequently arrested for reckless endangerment, reckless driving, criminal mischief and unlicensed operation.
- A 23-year-old man was arrested on Herricks Road for an outstanding Glen Cove traffic warrant, driving with a license suspended for a prior DWI, excessive speed in a school zone, and circumventing a vehicle interlock device.
- A driver on Stewart Avenue and Harrison Street was charged with unlicensed operation and excessive speed.
- A driver on Clinch Avenue was charged with driving with a suspended license and passing a stop sign.
- A credit card mailed to a P.O. Box in Garden City was reportedly intercepted and used to make unauthorized purchases.
March 24

- A stray dog bit a person on the hand on Clinton Road, causing cuts and bleeding. Town of Hempstead responded to the scene and removed the dog.
- A driver on Clinton Road was charged with driving with a suspended registration and excessive speed.
- Police received a report of a vehicle driving on a Brompton Road property causing lawn damage.
- A person on Wickham Road was cited for soliciting without a permit and driving with a suspended license.
March 25
- A vehicle parked in a Stewart Avenue parking field was damaged.
- Officers responded to a railroad gate malfunction at the Nassau Boulevard train crossing.
- Officers responded to multiple traffic light malfunctions at various locations in the village.
- Police responded to New Hyde Park Road for a water line break.
- Firefighters and police responded to a residence for a carbon monoxide alarm. Firefighters declared the area was safe.
- Firefighters and police responded to a restaurant for a fire alarm and determined the cause to be excess oven smoke.
March 26

- Detectives are investigating a report of a person altering a check and attempting to cash it at a bank.
- A driver on Washington Avenue was charged with driving with a suspended license and excessive speed.
March 27
- A walkway light was reported stolen from the front yard of a Nassau Boulevard residence.
- A person was seen on surveillance cameras looking into a vehicle parked in a Brompton Road driveway. There was no apparent entry or loss.
March 28
- A cell phone was reportedly stolen from a desktop inside a local bank.
- Graffiti was found on a tree in the MTA Right of Way in the vicinity of Stewart Avenue.
- A business check written to Workmen’s Compensation was intercepted, altered and cashed by an unknown person.
- A driver on Clinch Avenue was charged with driving with a suspended registration and unlicensed operation.
- Officers responded to a traffic light malfunction on Franklin Avenue at 11th Street.
- A driver on Cherry Valley Avenue was charged with unlicensed operation and passing a stopped school bus.
March 29
- As a result of a vehicle stop on Cathedral Avenue for multiple aggressive driving violations, officers arrested the 50-year-old driver for DWI, excessive speed, passing a red light and failure to maintain lane of travel.
- Officers investigated a report of someone opening up unauthorized bank accounts using a victim’s identity. It was also determined there were multiple unauthorized charges made against the victim’s credit card account.
- A black pickup truck reportedly left the scene after crashing into another vehicle on the Adelphi University campus.
- A driver at the intersection of Clinton Road and Stewart Avenue was charged with a suspended license and unregistered operation.
- A driver on Rockaway Avenue was charged with unlicensed operation and excessive speed.
- Officers responded Cherry Valley Avenue where a southbound truck struck the overpass. The driver was charged with disregarding bridge clearance signs.
