Garden City 2022-23 School Budget Vote: What You Need To Know

GARDEN CITY, NY — On May 17, voters in the Garden City School District will head to the polls to vote for the district's proposed 2022-23 budget, as well as for candidates running for the Board of Education.

The polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. in the gymnasium of the high school, located at 170 Rockaway Ave.

The proposed 2022-23 budget is $2.2 million larger than the current spending plan, bringing the total to $124,579,449. That's an increase of 1.79 percent. The property tax levy is increasing by 1.2 percent to cover the cost.

According to the district, in addition to continuing current programs and standards, the proposed budget will fund new math resources for elementary students, new opportunities for extracurricular clubs for elementary students, new STEAM programs and makerspace in the middle school, new courses and outdoor learning spaces at the high school, and more.

In addition to the budget, residents will also be voting on two ballot propositions. Proposition 2 would give the district the permission to spend $11 million from the Capital Reserve Fund to make improvements in schools throughout the district. It would not have any affect on taxes.

Proposition 3 asks to establish a new Capital Reserve Fund of $16.2 million. The money would be used to fund future work around the district.

Residents will also vote for three trustees for the Board of Education. Incumbent William Holub is being challenged by Arthur Gnecco; Colleen Foley and William O'Donohue are running for the seat currently held by Stefanie Granville; and Joseph Sileo is running unopposed to fill the seat recently vacated by Michael Cassaro.
