Garden City Extends Partnership with Covanta
Officials have locked in a competitive rate for waste disposal services over the next seven years.

Garden City Village officials opted to extend an agreement with Covanta Energy, locking in a "competitive and stable rate" for waste disposal services over the next seven years.
Their current agreement was due to expire in 2015. Garden City has used the Westbury-based energy-to-waste facility for disposal services dating back to 1989.
“The new agreement with Covanta continues our long-term, successful partnership and provides predictable rates for the essential service of waste disposal to the residents of Garden City,” said former mayor Don Brudie. “Covanta is a reliable partner and is handling our waste in a sustainable manner by generating electricity instead of sending it to landfills."
The Covanta facility processes approximately 2,500 tons of municipal solid waste per day into 80 megawatts of clean, renewable electricity – enough to power approximately 70,000 homes on Long Island. The village annually generates approximately 14,000 tons of that municipal solid waste.
“Covanta is very pleased to be continuing our relationship,” said Thomas Murphy, business manager of Covanta Hempstead. “We are proud of our work to provide reliable and sustainable waste disposal services at stable rates, and look forward to serving the villages for many years to come.”
