GARDEN CITY, NY — Garden City Police Officer Thomas Carroll received the Town of Hempstead Police Service Award during a ceremony at Town Hall Oct. 15 for his quick actions that saved a family from a house fire.

While on patrol at about 6 a.m. on a Friday morning last year, Carroll saw dark smoke coming from the back of a Garden City home. He went to investigate and found a large AC condenser on fire, with flames starting to run up the back of the house.

Carroll called the Garden City Fire Department and then woke up the family in the home, evacuating them to safety. Firefighters were able to put the fire out before it spread out of control.
