Garden City Police, Firefighters Rescue Kittens From Car

GARDEN CITY, NY — The Garden City Police Department reported the following incidents for the week ending Nov. 9.

Nov. 2

  • A driver on Stewart Avenue at John Street was charged with driving with switched plates, unregistered vehicle and uninsured operation.
  • Police investigated a report of someone changing the mailing address of a resident to an out-of-state address.
  • Officers responded to a railroad gate malfunction at the Stewart Manor railroad station crossing.
  • A driver on Old Country Road was charged with driving with a suspended license and improper license plates.

  • A Long Island City company was charged with operating a truck on Clinton Road while 30,000 pounds overweight.
  • Officers and firefighters rescued kittens who were stuck in the undercarriage of a vehicle on St. James Street North. They were taken to a local veterinarian for observation.
  • The storm door to a Pine Street residence was reportedly damaged by unknown means.
  • A driver on Stewart and Cherry Valley Avenues was charged with driving with a suspended license, excessive speed and following another vehicle too closely.

Nov. 4

  • A resident stated he received a fraudulent check as payment for an item he was selling on Facebook.
  • Officers arrested a 40-year-old man on Washington Avenue for driving with a revoked license (DWI related), four additional license suspensions and unsafe lane usage.
  • A driver said a white car crashed into her vehicle on Stewart Avenue and fled the scene without stopping.

  • As a result of a traffic stop investigation on Hampton Road, a 51-year-old man was arrested for a Suffolk County Family Court warrant. He was also charged with excessive speed in a school zone.
  • A truck inspection was conducted on Clinton Road. Thirteen vehicles were inspected, of which six were placed out of service. Forty-five tickets were issued for various traffic and safety violations. Two drivers were charged with driving with a suspended license.
  • A Garden City business reported receiving harassing phone calls from an ex-employee.

Nov. 6

  • Officers monitored a Veterans Day ceremony at the Rainbow Monument on Clinton Road.
  • Garden City detectives arrested a 26-year-old man for using another person’s credit card information for multiple unauthorized purchases. He was charged with identity theft and larceny.
  • A 17-year-old man was arrested for a Nov. 1 incident on Washington Avenue where he left the scene of a two-vehicle-crash with injuries.
  • Garden City detectives arrested a 31-year-old woman for the theft of a tip jar from a 7th Street restaurant on Oct. 19.
  • Officers monitored a demonstration with 25 participants on Stewart Avenue and Franklin Avenue.
  • Officers responded to a traffic light malfunction at the intersection of Nassau Boulevard and South Avenue.

Nov. 7

  • Officers are investigating a report of a person receiving numerous harassing phone calls.
  • Officers responded to a residence for a personal medical alert activation. Upon investigation, the alarm was set in error.

Nov. 8

  • Police assisted the Garden City Fire Department, which responded to a working fire at a Commercial Avenue auto body shop. The fire apparently started in a spray paint booth and extended towards the roof. Two workers suffered burns and smoke inhalation, and were treated at the scene by NYU and NCPD ambulances and transported to a local hospital for further treatment and evaluation. Other area fire departments responded and assisted. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire, minimizing the damage to the building. The Nassau County Fire Marshal and NCPD Arson Squad are continuing the investigation regarding the cause of the fire.
  • Six drivers were charged with excessive speed in a school zone on New Hyde Park Road.
  • Police are investigating a report of a white SUV leaving the scene after running over the foot of a 65-year-old woman in Parking Field 6E. The victim suffered foot and facial injuries.
  • A woman reported there were several unauthorized charges against her bank account.

Nov. 9

  • Detectives investigated the reported theft of crypto currency from a resident’s Coinbase account.
  • An unlicensed driver was charged with passing a stop sign on Kingsbury Road and not securing two children in proper child seats.
  • Police and firefighters responded to a residence for a fire alarm and determined the cause to be construction in the building.
