Garden City Wind Ensemble Featured on Penn Station Video

Students perform "Change at Jamaica," an original work by Pulitzer Prize winning composer and Adelphi University Professor Paul Moravec.

Passing through Penn Station? Look and listen for trains, but also for the continuous looping video along the 34th Street corridor of Garden City’s Wind Ensemble performing “Change at Jamaica,” an original work by Pulitzer Prize winning composer and Adelphi University Professor Paul Moravec.

Not too many musicians get to hear performance critiques directly from the composer, but members of James McCrann’s Wind Ensemble did just that during a rehearsal Mr. Moravec attended before the group debuted the three-movement piece at their Spring Concert on April 25.

“Change at Jamaica” was commissioned by eight school districts and based on an experience all students had in common: a trip on the Long Island Rail Road. The evening performance was made even more special with the attendance of Helena Williams, president of the LIRR and a Garden City resident, who presented Mr. McCrann with a commemorative plaque.

Adelphi University captured the magic of this collaboration in a video now available on YouTube. The district would like to express its thanks to Adelphi University, Paul Moravec, and the Long Island Rail Road for providing this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!
