Hofstra Names New Dean Of Medical School

Dr. Bavid Battinelli will take the helm of the school next year, officials said.

UNIONDALE, NY — Hofstra University has named Dr. David Battinelli the next dean of the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. Battinelli is currently the vice dean of the school, and will take charge of the school in mid-2022.

According to Hofstra President Susan Poser, Battinelli was instrumental in developing the faculty, curriculum and operations of the school. He has also played a key role in Northwell's coronavirus response. He is also in charge of the overall professional management of clinical, education, research and operation issues for the hospital's medical and clinical affairs.

Battinelli came to Northwell Health from Boston Medical Center, where he served as the vice chair for education, program director, internal medicine residency program and professor of medicine at Boston University School of Medicine. A board-certified internist, he was also an active staff doctor at Boston Medical Center and the Boston Veterans Administration.

"In the 10 years since the arrival of its first class, the Zucker School of Medicine has become nationally known for its excellent outcomes, its renowned faculty and innovative medical education, thanks to the insight, experience and wisdom of our founding dean, Larry Smith," Poser wrote in a letter announcing the appointment. "I am certain that Dr. Battinelli will continue the tradition of educational and clinical excellence set by Dr. Smith and follow his example of leadership for years to come."
