Village Justice Allen Mathers Takes The Oath
Longtime resident elected to another four-year term.
Allen S. Mathers took the oath of office Monday, a familiar procedure for the longtime resident who's served as village justice for the past 16 years.
He was elected to another four-year term March 19, garnering 289 votes.
Supreme Court Justice Stephen Bucaria did the honors. "I've really been impressed by the caliber and quality of justice this village has, particularly in this present village justice," he said before administering the oath.
"The quality is terrific but much more important than that is what he adds to that which is the human dimension in carrying out what can be for some a difficult task but you do it with grace and style and I'm proud of that."
Previously, Judge Mathers served as mayor of the Village of Garden City from 1993-1995. He actually signed the contract for the purchase of St. Paul's School.
He also created the Environmental Advisory Board and began the first expansion of Community Park. For all this and much more, he earned the Garden City Chamber of Commerce's Community Achievement Award during the eighth annual Pineapple Ball in 2010.
