Man Crashes Into Telephone Pole In Westbury: Police

WESTBURY, NY — A New Cassel man was arrested for drunken driving early Tuesday in Westbury, police said.

Fredi Merala, 39, driving a 2007 Chevy Silverado, slammed into a telephone pole at the intersection of Old Country Road and Merrick Avenue, police said.

Merala, who appeared to be impaired by alcohol, was arrested without incident, police said.

He was taken to an area hospital for medical evaluation and was charged with two counts of driving while intoxicated, authorities said.

Merala was scheduled to be arraigned on Tuesday.
