EAST GARDEN CITY, NY — A Brooklyn man was arrested Monday night after police say he injured multiple officers while trying to flee an arrest.

According to police, on the evening of April 11, officers approached a black 2009 Honda Accord with California plates, which they recognized from an earlier incident, in the parking lot of Roosevelt Field Mall, located at 630 Old Country Road in East Garden City.

As the the officers were investigating, police say the driver — Robert Reaves, 25, of Brooklyn — began to rev the engine and drove into their police car multiple times in an effort to flee. Police say the officers broke both the driver and passenger windows with their hands and used their stun guns to try to stop Reaves.

The stun guns did not work, and police say Reaves nearly hit the officers as the fled the scene, heading south on Ring Road. The officers called for backup, and a police helicopter was sent to the scene. It followed the car and relayed its location to officers on the ground.

Police say Reaves drove into an Emergency Services truck at the intersection of Barwick Boulevard and Hill Street in Mineola, injuring two officers. Reaves refused to get out of the car, police said, and a struggle ensued. One officer was injured in the fight, police said.

Reaves was arrested at 8:20 p.m. and taken to a hospital for evaluation, as was a female passenger in the car. Five officers were injured during the incident. They were all treated at a local hospital.

Police say the car was stolen from Queens.

The passenger, a 19-year-old woman from Jamaica, New York, was charged with unauthorized use of a vehicle. She was issued an appearance ticket returnable to First District Court in Hempstead.

Reaves was charged with three counts of second-degree assault, two counts of second-degree criminal mischief, criminal possession of stolen property, reckless endangerment, unauthorized use of a vehicle, obstructing governmental administration, resisting arrest and numerous vehicle and traffic law violations. He is scheduled to be arraigned later today in First District Court in Hempstead.

Police say Reaves was arrested on Jan. 1 on an open warrant from an arrest on April 7, 2021 for an assault in Rockville Centre. He was released to participate in a court-ordered program, and was fitted with an ankle bracelet that was monitored by Nassau County Probation.
