Man Stalked Woman, Put GPS On Her Car: Garden City Police

GARDEN CITY, NY — The Garden City Police Department reported the following incidents for the week ending Aug. 24.
Aug. 18
- Garden City detectives arrested a 36-year-old man for following and stalking a woman on multiple occasions and for placing unauthorized tracking devices on her vehicle. He was charged with criminal tampering and stalking.
- A driver on Clinton Road was charged with unlicensed operation and excessive speed. Another motorist on Washington Avenue was charged with driving with a suspended registration and unlicensed operation.
- A bicycle was reported stolen from a Wickham Road garage.
- Firefighters and officers responded to a residence for a possible gas leak. Firefighters safeguarded the home by disconnecting the natural gas line to the stove.

- Upon investigation of a one-vehicle crash on Stewart Avenue and Clinton Road, officers arrested a 30-year-old man for DWI. He was charged with a felony due to a prior conviction for DWI.
- Police and firefighters responded to a residence for a smoke condition. It was determined the cause was burnt food.
- A driver on Stewart Avenue and Garfield Street was charged with unlicensed operation and speeding.
Aug. 20
- Officers responded to a report of a subject fleeing the scene after stealing multiple items from CVS. After searching the area, officers arrested a 30-year-old man in Parking Field 9E. He was charged with petty larceny. Upon further investigation, the man was found to be the subject of an outstanding NYPD Robbery Warrant.

- An officer responded to a traffic light malfunction on Stewart Avenue at Rockaway Avenue.
- Officers responded to the vicinity of the Nassau Boulevard railroad crossing for a MTA Railroad Vehicle Crash alarm. Officers checked the area and observed no indications of a crash.
- A driver on Clinton Road was charged with unlicensed operation and excessive speed.
- Due to heavy rains, officers and firefighters responded to, and safeguarded, several flooding conditions throughout the village. In addition, they assisted several stranded motorists in high flood areas on Cherry Valley Avenue.
Aug. 22
- Officers investigated a report of a black sedan leaving the scene southbound on Clinton Road after crashing into another vehicle on Stewart Avenue.
- Due to Tropical Storm Henri, Officers and Firefighters responded to numerous storm related calls on Aug. 21 and 22, including flooding conditions, disabled vehicles, alarms, fallen tree limbs, a transformer fire, a house fire, and dislodged manhole covers.
Aug. 23
- Officers and firefighters responded to a working house fire at 130 Stewart Ave. First arriving officers were able to force their way into the home but were pushed back by heavy smoke. Arriving firefighters then entered the opening provided by the officers and rescued two elderly residents. The firefighters then extinguished the fire. There was substantial damage to the home. The fire apparently started in the basement electrical panel. The residents were transported to an area hospital for smoke inhalation. One officer suffered a knee injury during the rescue attempt. The NCPD Arson Squad and County Fire Marshals responded to the scene.
- Officers responded to a rear yard on 11th Street and extinguished a power line fire. Firefighters responded and rendered the area safe.
- A motorist on Hilton Avenue was charged with driving with a suspended registration and switched license plates.
Aug. 24
- A Garden City Plaza business said a check written out to the company was deposited into a fraudulent account.
- A 7th Street business reported seven fraudulent checks were cashed against a client’s bank account.
- An Old Country Road business reported a check written out to a client was stolen, altered and cashed by an unknown subject.
- Police and firefighters responded to a residence for smoke in the basement. Firefighters determined the cause to be a defective dryer. The area was rendered safe.
- A driver on Clinton Road was charged with driving with a suspended license, inoperable headlights, and defective brake lights.
- A driver on Cathedral Avenue and 3rd Street was charged with unlicensed operation and driving without a bumper.
