Resident: We Are Not Fraternity Row: The Garden City village board is in the process of amending the village's housing and zoning codes in light of what one resident describes as "transient dormitory-style houses" popping up throughout the village. Trustee Brian Daughney, who's spearheading the efforts to make the amendment, said the board is very cognizant of Garden City's character and that the amendment is intended to better help enforce and strengthen the code for the future.

Cuts Would Lay Off 5, Possibly 6 Officers: During budget talks earlier this year, Garden City trustees directed department heads to reduce personnel costs by 4 percent. Police commissioner Kenneth Jackson said reducing the police department by six officers, in addition to the six reduced in recent years, would seriously compromise community safety. In the end, the board opted to restore some of the 4 percent cuts, resulting in no layoffs within the department.

Garden City Scout Leader Pleads Guilty to Child Porn Charges: A Garden City scout leader pleaded guilty to distributing child pornography to others via the Internet, according to Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice. Edward Orenchuk, III, 23, pleaded guilty to the top count against him -- promoting a sexual performance by a child as a sexually motivated felony -- in exchange for a promised sentence from Judge Angelo Delligatti of six months in jail and 10 years of probation with sex offender restrictions.

House Cleaner Busted on Hidden Camera Stealing Money, Jewelry: An Elmont woman, while employed as a house cleaner, was busted on hidden camera stealing money and assorted jewelry from a Garden City home, according to village police. On March 22 the 50-year-old victim said she noticed approximately $45,000 worth of jewelry missing from her Euston Road home, detectives reported. The victim installed a hidden camera in her bedroom and on April 12 Maria Iezzi, 56, was seen on camera taking money out of a drawer. When caught, police found the defendant in possession of three pieces of silverware, a gold colored charm, a silver colored bracelet and a tennis bracelet all belonging to the victim.

Crash Sends Car into Church Parking Lot: While St. Anne's parishioners were celebrating Easter Sunday Mass, a collision on New Hyde Park Road caused one driver to come to rest atop two parked cars in the church parking lot, according to police.

Prostitution Arrests Made at E. Garden City, West Hempstead Motels: Four women were arrested at motels in E. Garden City and West Hempstead after allegedly offering to engage in sexual acts with undercover Nassau County detectives for money.

Crime Blotter: Meadow Street Break-In, Bank Manager Arrested: With cooperation and assistance from Community National Bank personnel, Officer Caputo arrested a bank manager, a female 49-year-old from Jamaica, for the theft of $3,800 from a customer’s account. The bank is located on Franklin Avenue. In other crime news, on April 10 a relative discovered that someone had entered a house on Meadow Street apparently through a bathroom window and kicked holes in the sheetrock walls and turned on the water in the basement.

Crime Blotter: Coquette Shoplifter, Overpass Collision, Harassment: A female subject stole assorted clothing valued at $263 from Coquette on Seventh Street in March. In other crime news, on April 1, a male 50-year-old from Brooklyn was operating a Medi-Transport Bus eastbound on Chestnut Street when he collided with the Chestnut Street overpass. He was transported to Winthrop-University Hospital for head injuries. There were no passengers in the vehicle and the bridge was not apparently damaged. The driver was ticketed for disregarding a bridge clearance sign.

Crime Blotter: Forcible Touching, Gate Malfunctions and a Struck Overpass: Garden City detectives arrested a male 23-year-old from New Hyde Park on April 4 for sexual offenses against a female acquaintance at a location within the village in February. He was charged with forcible touching and sexual abuse in the 3rd degree. In other crime news, Officer Touhy cited a male 34-year-old from NY, NY for disobeying a bridge clearance sign on April 5 after striking the Cherry Valley overpass with his truck. There were no injuries reported.
