Curran credited Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder and his commitment to intelligence-led policing as the main reason Nassau received the designation two years in a row. Intelligence-led policing, Curran explained, uses data on arrests, criminal records, domestic incidents, gang activity and more to create analytics and patterns, and then allocate police resources to the areas that need it most.
Ryder boasted that Nassau continues to see declining crime rates, even as crime is spiking in other parts of the country. Major crime is down more than 7 percent so far this year compared to last year, he said.
"We're going to make sure we continue to work with our communities and drive our numbers in the right direction," said Ryder.
