A person was struck on the Long Island Railroad tracks near the New Hyde Park train station Friday morning, causing service to be suspended.

The LIRR sent out an e-mail alert at about 11 a.m. indicating that an unauthorized person on the tracks had been struck by an unoccupied non-passenger train near the station.

The train was traveling eastbound and struck the person at about 10:40 a.m. according to a LIRR spokesman.

The gender of the victim or their condition has not yet been released.

LIRR service has been suspended between Jamaica and Hicksville.

Update: 12 p.m.: Vehicular traffic is being allowed through the at-grade crossings of New Hyde Park Road and South 12th Street. LIRR service is still suspended.

Update: 12:30 p.m.: Service remains temporarily suspended between Jamaica and Hicksville. The medical examiner is on the scene and and service is anticipated to be restored within the next 15-20 minutes.
