Officer Nearly Hit By Drunk Driver: Garden City Police

GARDEN CITY, NY — The Garden City Police Department reported the following incidents for the weekending Sept. 7.
Sept. 1
- A driver was charged with speeding in a school zone on Rockaway Avenue and driving with a suspended registration.
- Police investigated a report of a person’s identity being used to open an unauthorized checking account.
- A Little Neck company was charged with the operation of an overweight truck on Old Country Road.
- Officers responded to 16 Tropical Storm Ida-related calls, including flood conditions, disabled cars, alarms, fire calls, medical aided cases, a property damage report, damaged utility poles and a water main break.

- Garden City Detectives responded to the Garden City Golf Club for a report of a stolen car. Detectives determined a vehicle with two occupants entered the golf club parking lot where one of the occupants exited the vehicle and entered another vehicle. Both vehicles then left the lot. Based on information the detectives developed at the scene, they responded to Queens, located the person who stole the car and upon further investigation, located the stolen car nearby. The person, a 21-year-old male, was charged with grand larceny. The investigation is ongoing regarding the second person.
- Two unlicensed driers were charged with speeding in a school zone on Rockaway Avenue, vicinity of the High School.
- A drier on Old Country Road was charged with driving with a suspended license and passing a stopped school bus.
- Officers responded to Garden Street for a report of a suspicious backpack next to a signpost. Upon investigation, it was determined the property belonged to a nearby resident and all was in order.
- Officers and water department personnel responded to Transverse Road for a water main break in the roadway.
Sept. 3
- Officers are investigating a report of two youths from Franklin Square assaulting two youths from Garden City South on 7th Street.
- Officers responded to a railroad gate malfunction at the Franklin Avenue train crossing.
- A man was seen on surveillance cameras stealing a bicycle from behind the Adelphi University bleachers.
- Officers investigated a report of a person, claiming to be from Amazon, calling a victim and stating there was fraudulent activity on her account and he needed access to clear it. The victim then gave the caller access to her account. It was later determined to be a scam when the victim discovered there was no fraudulent activity on her account before the phone call. However, there were multiple fraudulent charges on her account after the phone call.
- As a result of a truck inspection checkpoint on Clinton Road, officers issued 28 tickets for various traffic and safety violations, including five overweight violations, three Haz-Mat violations, and two unsecured load violations.

- Two bicycles were reported stolen from the rear deck of a 1st Street residence.
- Firefighters and officers responded to a 2nd Street apartment building for an odor of gas. Upon investigation, firefighters found an open gas valve in an apartment. Firefighters secured the valve and vented the building.
- A driver on Rockaway Avenue was charged with excessive speed and unlicensed operation.
Sept. 5
- Police and firefighters responded to a Yale Street home where firefighters extinguished a grill fire.
- A 27-year-old man was arrested on Clinton Road for DWI, driving without headlamps activated, and unsafe lane usage.
- A drier on Clinton Road was charged with driving with a suspended registration and excessive speed.
Sept. 6
- An officer was conducting a traffic stop investigation on Clinton Road when another vehicle passed him at a high rate of speed, almost striking him and his police vehicle. The vehicle was stopped by another officer who was responding to the scene. Upon investigation, the driver, a 31-year-old male, was arrested for DWI, speeding, and failure to yield right of way to an emergency vehicle. He was also charged with Leandra’s Law (Aggravated DWI) and endangering the welfare of a child when it was determined a passenger in the vehicle was under 16 years old.
- Graffiti was found on an exterior wall of an Old Country Road storage garage.
- A driver on Rockaway Avenue was charged with driving with a suspended license and excessive speed.
- A driver on Stewart Avenue at Tullamore Road was charged with driving with a suspended registration and speeding.
Sept. 7
- A transport van travelling west struck the Chestnut Street LIRR overpass. The driver was charged with disregarding bridge clearance signs. The driver and passenger were not injured.
- A vehicle was damaged by unknown means while parked on the Adelphi University campus.
- Police and firefighters responded to a Washington Avenue business for a fire alarm. It was determined steam in the building activated the alarm.
- A driver on Franklin Avenue was charged with unlicensed operation and excessive speed in a school zone.
- Police and firefighters responded to Parking Field 7N where youths set fire to a gallon of hand sanitizer on the brick pavement behind the stores. Firefighters extinguished the fire. The investigation is ongoing.
