6 Hurt In Westbury Apartment Blaze

The blaze broke out early Tuesday morning.

Six people were hospitalized as a result of a fire that broke out in a Westbury apartment building on Tuesday morning, police say.

Several fire departments all responded to the Post Avenue apartment blaze at 12:33 a.m. One resident was hospitalized for burns while four police officers and one member of the Westbury Fire Department were hospitalized for smoke inhalation. The firefighter was off-duty, ABC7 reports.

The Westbury, East Meadow, Carle Place, Hicksville and Jericho Fire Departments all responded to extinguish the fire.

The Office of Emergency Management, N.C. Fire Marshal and the Arson/Bomb Squad all responded to scene.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined, police say. The investigation is ongoing.

Residents have returned to their apartments since the fire was put out.

Great appreciation to the members of the Westbury Fire Department (and the neighboring departments that responded for mutual aid) to put out a working fire at 135 Post Avenue last night. Their quick response averted what could have been a much more serious incident. As it was, one resident was hospitalized, and a number of first responders (one WFD member and 4 police officers) were treated for smoke inhalation. The community owes a great debt for the sacrifices made day in and day out by our volunteer fire fighters. God bless them and keep them safe.
