ICYMI: 78-Year-Old Accused Of Attacking Cop, Police Say

Police say he made a stabbing motion towards a cop with a metal tobacco pipe.

HICKSVILLE, NY — A Hicksville man has been arrested on charges related to an assault on a police officer, according to a release from the Nassau County Police Department.

Around 12:45 a.m. Thursday morning, officers were called to an Emmet Place home on a disturbance call, police said. They found several people there including 78-year-old Joel Ferdinand.

Ferdinand became uncooperative and kicked a box full of bottles at the officers, police said.

As officers tried to handcuff Ferdinand, he flailed his arms and made "stabbing motions" toward the officers with a metal tobacco pipe, police said. He pushed an officer at a table, causing them to hit their head.

That officer "suffer substantial pain and swelling to their head," police said, and was treated at a nearby hospital.

Police arrested Ferdinand and took him to a hospital for assessment.

Ferdinand was charged with second-degree assault, menacing a police officer, resisting arrest and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

He was expected to appear in court Thursday.
