Burglar Lunges At 3, Including Child, Cuts Man In Long Island Home Invasion: Police

He broke into the home at around 5 a.m., but was tackled to the ground before officers arrived, Nassau police said.

HICKSVILLE, NY — A man broke into a Hicksville home grabbed a kitchen knife and lunged at the residents, including a 10-year-old girl, before cutting a man early Sunday morning, Nassau police said.

Officers were called to the West Cherry Avenue home for a burglary in progress at around 5 a.m., and upon arrival, officers found Alberto Garcia, a 35-year-old man whose last known address was at the home, according to police.

They learned he had gone inside the home through an unlocked living room window and went to the kitchen where he grabbed a red kitchen knife before making his way to a basement bedroom and confronting a 24-year-old man, a 34-year-old woman, and a 10-year-old girl, police said.

Garcia then lunged at the man, while swinging the knife and caused a laceration to his right thumb, police said, adding that the man threw a blanket onto Garcia and tackled him to the ground, where he held him until officers arrived.

The man was taken to a local hospital by a police ambulance and then treated for his injuries, and

Garcia was also taken for a medical evaluation, police said.

The woman and child were not injured in the scuffle, according to police.

The knife was recovered by officers at the scene, police said.

Police did not release further details.

Garcia is charged with second-degree attempted murder, two counts first-degree burglary, fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, and endangering the welfare of a child.

He will be arraigned in First District Court in Hempstead on Monday.
