Hicksville LIRR Station Reopens North Platform, Moves To Next Construction Phase

The busiest station on Long Island is undergoing $121 million in renovations to get with the 21st century.

A $121 million construction initiative to rebuild and modernize the the busiest Long Island Rail Road Station completed Phase 2 of its project and reopened the north platform, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority announced on Tuesday.

The MTA says improvements at the Hicksville station include electronic displays, translucent canopies, energy-efficient platform lighting and new staircases.

The aging 55-year-old station is in the process of being transformed to accommodate its daily commuting demands.

Phase 1 of the project began in Sept. 2016 and ended in the spring. Phase 2 took place over the course of the summer. The final phase, Phase 3, begins in the fall, which will focus on reconstructing/rebuilding the south platform, escalator and center staircases as well as replacing the easternmost and westernmost staircases.

The LIRR says the escalator will be back and running towards the end of 2017.

Construction is expected to be completed by spring of 2018.

Once completed, the new Hicksville station, just 16 miles east of Jamaica, will feature:

  • Wi-Fi and USB charging stations throughout
  • An enhanced interior waiting room
  • New platforms with glass-enclosed, heated waiting rooms
  • Improved lighting
  • A translucent canopy roof
  • Improved stairways
  • Escalators
  • Plaza elevators
  • A video security system
  • Audio and digital communications systems
  • Better signage
  • Laminated art glass installations by New York-based artist Roy Nicholson, who designed the mosaic tile artwork in the station ticket office in 2011
