Hicksville Students Learn Important Lessons On 9/11

Social studies classes at Hicksville Middle School participated in a variety of creative lessons and activities on Sept. 11 to remember the 9/11 attacks and to understand the impact that they left — and continue to have — on society.

Students viewed webinars, shared personal family stories about the day, reviewed others’ accounts of 9/11 and learned about the acts of kindness shown toward those directly affected by the attacks. Some interviewed their parents about 9/11 and held discussions in class. Others conducted their lessons to the backdrop of patriotic music, while still others colored an American flag as a show of unity.

In Joseph Hartig’s seventh grade class, students worked in groups, moving between virtual stations that provided content on different effects of 9/11, such as loss of life and damage, the impact on the economy, the invasion of Afghanistan, increased security measures worldwide and tensions between the Muslim people and people of other faiths. The students were asked to answer specific questions and write about the impacts of 9/11. Hartig also gave every student a commemorative 9/11 pin.
