Man Who Fled Country Faces Murder Charge In LI Woman's Death

Haley Anderson, a 22-year-old nursing student at Binghamton University, was reportedly strangled to death.

A Binghamton University student who fled the country after Westbury woman Haley Anderson was found dead earlier this month has been charged with second-degree murder, Broome County District Attorney Steve Cornwell announced Saturday.

Orlando Tercero, 22, was taken into custody in Nicaragua at the Hospital de León on Tuesday, March 13 after receiving medical attention for self-inflicted injuries, according to National Nicaragua Police. A warrant has been filed for Tercero to be extradited back to Broome County in Upstate New York.

Tercero fled to the country to Nicaragua shortly before authorities discovered the body of Anderson, a 22-year-old nursing student at Binghamton University, on Friday, March 9 after her death occurred the day before.

Anderson's cause of death was found to be strangulation, according to Binghamton University's student newspaper Pipe Dream.

Tercero, who is also a nursing student at BU, had a previous romantic relationship with Anderson and reportedly slashed her tires in September of last year, according to Pipe Dream.
