Nassau Man Caught Selling Drugs With His 1-Year-Old In Car: Police

Police say they intercepted the drug deal as it was happening, and arrested two men.

NEW CASSEL, NY — Two men were arrested during the middle of a drug trade in New Cassel on Tuesday night, Nassau County police said.

Ifficers were on patrol when they saw a drug sale between two men on Prospect Avenue at 11:30 p.m., according to police.

The officers approached, and police say they found a bag of alprazolam pills in the hand of Matthew Kovsh, 28, of Hicksville. He was placed under arrest without incident.

When officers tried to arrest the other man, identified as Melquawn Abernathy, 29, of Westbury, police said he became violent and combative. The officers were able to arrest him, police said.

Abernathy's 1-year-old son was in his car at the scene, and was released to a family member, police said.

During a search, police say they found oxycodone in Kovsh's possession. They found brass knuckles in Abernathy's car, and he also hadoxycodone hydrochloride, alprazolam and oxycodon, police said.

Kovsh was charged with third- and fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, and two counts of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Abernathy is charged with two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, three counts of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, endangering the welfare of a child and resisting arrest.

Both men are scheduled to be arraigned today in First District Court in Hempstead.
