Trio Arrested For New Cassel Assaults: Police

One teen suffered a laceration from a knife and another was knocked unconscious, police say.

Three men were arrested for two assaults that occurred in August and September in New Cassel, police say.

According to authorities, a 17-year-old man and woman were walking on Railroad avenue when they were approached by a dark vehicle at 12:05 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 18. Police say 26-year-old Roman Live, 17-year-old Fernando Mejia and 24-year-old Fredy Hernandez exited the vehicle and started screaming while one was holding a knife.

The woman suffered a laceration on her palm after she raised her left hand to protect herself from a blade that stuck her, police say. Live, Mejia and Hernandez then fled the scene, police say. The woman was taken to an area hospital to be treated for her wound.

On Tuesday, Sept. 12, the man involved in the August assault was approached by a group of males, including the three from the previous incident, and was questioned about filing a police report, according to authorities. Police say the man was punched in the face, causing him to become unconscious and suffer a large laceration to his lip. He was taken to an area hospital for treatment.

An investigation led to the arrest of Live, Mejia and Hernandez.

Live, of New Cassel, was arrested on Wednesday, Sept. 13. Mejia, of New Cassel, was arrested on Wednesday, Sept. 20. Hernandez, of Westbury, was arrested on Wednesday, Sept. 27.

Mejia and Hernandez were charged with second-degree assault and two counts of second-degree menacing. Live was charged with second-degree tampering with a witness, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon and third-degree assault.

Live and Mejia were previously arraigned. Hernandez will be arraigned Thursday at First District Court in Hempstead.
