Feat of the Week: Gowins Runs Wild

St. Anthony's back records second-best day in program history.

Everyone pointed toward big things for the reinventedĀ St. Anthony'sĀ offense.Ā

Everyone saidĀ Jordan Gowins would shineĀ in the new system.
Ā
But what happened Saturday in Westchester went beyond hyperbole. Gowins, a junior running back, rushed for a career-high 298 yards and three touchdowns on 18 attemptsĀ as St. Anthony's ran past host Stepinac, 31-14.Ā

Gowins' big day was the second-best rushing performance in program history. Only former Penn State star Matt Hahn has had a bigger day for the Friars when he ran forĀ 352 yards against Holy Trinity in 2003.

Gowins averaged 16.5 yards per carry against Stepinac, whichĀ included a 94-yard breakaway that gave the Friars a 28-14 edge early in the fourth.

Gowns leads allĀ Long Island rushersĀ with 609 yards and 7 TDs in three games.Ā

And Gowins has done it all on the road. St. Anthony's plays itsĀ home opener Friday at 7 p.m.Ā against Staten Island rival Farrell.

TheĀ spread offense installed during the off-seasonĀ was built with Gowins, a Bellport native with a football pedigree, in mind. We're just three games into 2013, but there's no doubt it's working.
