Kings Park Bluffs: From Shipping Hub to Staycation Spot [Photos]

According to a historical book about the Smithtown area, at one time Kings Park Bluff was known as Cornish’s Dock and was an important transportation hub in the 19th century but once the Long Island Rail Road was built, shipping on the Long Island Sound became a less desirable way to ferry goods and people along to New York City. (A similar fate that befell a popular sloop called the Emperor that ran out of Port Jefferson Harbor.)

But you can’t keep a beautiful bluff down and since then the place where the Nissequogue River meets the Long Island Sound has become a center of recreation for residents who look to fish, boat and swim in its waters. Last year, Kings Park Patch readers voted the bluff as their favorite place to “staycation” in the area.

With such a breathtaking landscape, its no wonder that the bluff has been immortalized by artists over the years in paint and pictures.

"My favorite thing about living in Kings Park is the nature around us," said Stephanie Turner, a resident who contributed photos of the bluff to this story.

For Turner there's no better stress relief for someone with kids, full-time job and commute than a walk outside enjoying the scenery.

"I have a dog and love to walk in Arthur Kunz Park and the Bluffs and, since I live in San Remo, I walk by the river almost every day," she said.

Agnes Fegan also loves taking photos of Kings Park Bluffs. She said she'll add special effects to them making some seem painterly and soft.

The Smithtown Historical Society dug up some great photos of the Kings Park Bluff dating from around 1900 to 1910. They show the bluffs at the turn of the century, with views of The Old Dock and the bluff and views looking out from the dock and bluff.
