Mixed Reaction to the Budget at the Polls

Voter turnout by noon on Tuesday had been steady for the Kings Park School District budget and board of education vote according to poll workers.

"Turnout has been about the same, no more no less," said Judy Bishop , assistant to the superintendent.

Voters who came out Tuesday all said the vote in every school election, but each had different opinions on the budget.

"I am retired," said James Dwyer, " but I want to see the kids get what they need and not take anything away." Dwyer said he voted in favor of the budget.

A couple, who declined to give their names said the thought the tax increase was a little high. "Taxes are being raised and we are losing teachers."

Valerie, who declined to give her last name and has children presently enrolled in the district said she voted against the budget.

"I can't afford this year after year," she said. "Other states pay a fraction of what we pay in taxes."

Voters will also get to pick two candidates out of four running for the board if education. None of the voters we spoke to indicated who they voted for.

Polls are open until 9 p,m.

"Around 6 p.m. Is when we get really busy" said district clerk Patti Copibianco.
