150 Orders and Counting for Mother's Day at Kings Park Florist
Kings Park Florist owner Judy McAvey estimates more than 150 orders have already been placed and there is still time to order floral arrangements before Mother's Day this Sunday.
"This is the busiest holiday," said McAvey. "We are the only ones in town, so it is very busy."
Town Gets $200K More for 2013 Highway Road Program
Smithtown Town officials voted to accept more than $200,000 in additional state funds to help with the repaving and fixing of 8 additional streets this year.Β
Smithtown Town board voted to expand the 2013 Highway Road Program due to a 28 percent increase to the stateβs Consolidated Local Street and Highway Improvement Program for 2013-14 fiscal year. The additional $229,318.67 in funding will be used to repave eight streets.Β
17 Kings Park Seniors Sign Letters of Intent
Several Kings Park High School Senior Student-Athletes have recently committed to continue their athletic and academic careers at the collegiate level next year.
Town Moves to Shut Down Kings Park Businesses
Smithtown officials voted on Tuesday to take legal action against 33 entities believed to operating businesses against town code off Lawrence Road in Kings Park.Β
Town Attorney John Zollo said he will be filing a lawsuit against 33 entities, a combination of property and business owners at 1 Lawrence Road, in New York State Supreme Court within the next two weeks. The town will ask the courts to permanently restrain all entities from engaging in business activities against the areaβs residential zoning code.Β
$560K Settlement for Wrongful Death Suit at Bluff Ramp
The families of two Centereach men received a $560,000 settlement on Tuesday from the town of Smithtown.
According toΒ Newsday, Smithtown officials unanimously authorized the settlement. The men died in 2008 after driving off the boat ramp into the Nissequogue River. The families claimed that the accident occurred due to βnegligent design, placement and maintenance of a roadway and the signsβ¦as well as the negligent design, placement and maintenance of the rampβ
Kings Park Places in Newsweek Top High School Rankings
Kings Park High SchoolΒ has scoredΒ a place on Newsweek's top 5,000 U.S. high schools rankings.
According to Newsweek, Kings Park ranked 562, with a graduation rate of 97 percent, a 94 percent college attendance rate, an average SAT score of 1588, an average ACT score of 24 and an average advanced placement testing score of 3.2.
Main Street Fashion Shop Closes
Almost as quickly as it opened,Β Olga Fashion and Variedades on Kings Park's Main Street has closed.
The clothing store, which soldΒ men and womenβs clothing as well as sneakers, shoes and perfume.Β opened in January, just a few doors down from another newcomer, Bella Fashion. Owner,Β Olga Gomez,told Patch back in January that she was alreadyΒ a little nervous about the lack of traffic in her store.
Board of Ed Candidates Square Off in Question and Answer Session
Four candidates running for the Kings Park Board of Educationsquared off on Thursday evening on topics ranging from taxes to testing.Β
The event, moderated by the League of Women Voters, gave residents a chance to ask questions, either at the podium or handed in on a card, in a round robin, timed fashion.Β
