Amityville Man Among Irish Americans Honored By Suffolk Lawmakers
A retired police detective, Don McVeety is a member of the fire department and active in community affairs.

AMITYVILLE, NY — Longtime Amityville Village resident Don McVeety was picked as the 15th Legislative District’s 2024 Irish American of Distinction by Suffolk County Legislature Minority Leader Jason Richberg, and honored at Suffolk County’s Irish American Heritage Month celebration on Wednesday
March was Irish American Heritage Month in Suffolk County, and in an effort to honor and highlight the contributions and leadership of Irish Americans throughout Suffolk County, each County Legislator was invited to select an Irish American person of distinction who resides in his or her respective legislative district.
The 18 honorees were recognized at the county’s annual Irish American Heritage Month celebration at the H. Lee Dennison Building in Hauppauge.

"I was thrilled to be able to recognize Don McVeety as the 15th legislative district's 2024 Irish American of Distinction,” Richberg said. "Don is well known around the 15th district and is highly respected for his commitment to his community — particularly for his support of veterans, law enforcement, children and families. His leadership and volunteerism serve as an inspiration to others. Congratulations, Don, and thank you for all that you do!"
McVeety is a member of the Amityville Fire Department. He is a United States Marine Corps Veteran and retired Detective of the Suffolk County Police Department. His extensive community service includes facilitating the renaming of the John J. Kreyer VFW Post 6223 to honor Amityville's only casualty of the Vietnam War, Eddie Asip; leading the annual Amityville Village USMC Toys for Tots collection; and organizing holiday parties for local children, as well as the annual Town of Babylon Wounded Warrior Ride.
