Babylon Town Says It's on Top of Potholes

Officials say pothole repair and road maintenance is on-going as residents eye potholes in Lindenhurst this Winter season.

Pothole season is here and likely to be in full bloom as Spring nears - especially given the blizzard that hit the area last Friday into Saturday and the new snow Lindenhurst was expecting on Valentine's Day morning.

So we asked readers on Lindenhurst Patch's Facebook page to let us know where they've spotted major cracks in the road.

Among them are West Gates Avenue, South Eighth Street, West John Street and North Fifth Street, the on/off ramps for Wellwood Avenue on Sunrise Highway, the Wellwood overpass, Broadway to Strong Avenue, North Queens Avenue, Lido Parkway, 35th Street and Albany Avenue between Hoffman and Strong Avenues.

Some of them are under Babylon Town's purview, some are under the Village's purview, and some are either Suffolk County or New York State roads.

In the Town
As for the roads handled by the Town, Babylon officials said its Road Improvement Program aims to fix not just the worst roads, but also aging and failing roads in part to reduce the number of potholes that need to be addressed each year.

"The Town of Babylon’s approach to potholes has always been stay ahead of the problem," Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez said.

"We do this by investing in our roads year-round to prevent damage and save on long-term repair costs and by staging a 'Pothole Blitz' every year as the Winter weather breaks - our inspectors comb every street of the Town searching for potholes so we can stay on top of the issue."

The annual Pothole Blitz usually starts in early March, but in the meantime the Town said it remains committed to its policy of responding to any pothole complaint within 48 hours.

And during the Winter months the Town applies a temporary "cold patch" to potholes.

"I encourage residents to call in any potholes they find to 311, and we'll respond rapidly," Martinez said.

As for State and County roads, they're not under the Town's jurisdiction. Potholes on NYS roads - including Sunrise and Montauk Highways and Route 109 - should be reported to the NYS Department of Transportation at 631-420-4270.

Potholes on County roads - including Straight Path and Wellwood Avenue* - can be reported to the Suffolk County Department of Public Works at 631-852-4070.
