Blogger Reflects on Her Recent Beauty Makeover in Post-Sandy World

Patch blogger and Lindenhurst resident Jan Hickman says her makeup counter makeover one weekend made her feel good, but she doesn't feel the $1,500-plus pricetag is worth it - especially in a post-Sandy world.

Lindenhurst Patch Blogger Jan Hickman recently posted an eye-opening update about the cost, variety and sanity of beauty products now being marketed as essential - plus, some thoughts about the relevance of the Big Beauty industry in the scheme of things.

Recently, "I was 'treated' to more than $1,500 worth of beauty products on my face (didn’t get to keep them - just try them out). They're supposed to change Life As I Know It. I eagerly await the transformation," wrote Hickman, a Lindenhurst resident, freelancer and volunteer.

"This all started out so innocently.A few weeks ago I strolled up to a cosmetics counter in Macy’s to buy a lipstick. That’s it. A pink product in a little tube. The Brand Representative (no such thing as a simple clerk, anymore) was enthused over the fact that on March 22, six national cosmetic artists from her brand were flying in to do free makeup sessions in the store and noted (looking at me critically – I was wearing concealer and ChapStick) how I might really benefit from this celestial event. So I let her make an appointment for me," she contonued.

She went on to describe her experience, and was amazed at all of the products the brand rep and her "makeup cheerleaders" said she absolutley needed, and when all told the price was more than $1,500.

Hickman walked away with a handful of items.

However, she reflected on the experience and did a cost-benefit analysis of the makeup in her life, noting while she felt better and got to show off her look after the makeover, the drawbacks - and the costs - far outweighed the benefits - especially after living through Hurricane Sandy in Lindenhurst and still, like so many in the community - are still trying to get their houses and lives back to some state of normalcy.
