Lindy Residents Recall '78 Blizzard as New Storm Hits

The historic storm hit Long Island 35 years ago this week.

High wind gusts, white-out conditions and more than a foot of snow.

It might sound very familiar, but this was the forecast for a snow storm that hit the Northeast 35 years ago this week when from February 5 through February 8 back in 1978 a blizzard blanketed the area.

There’s even a website dedicated to it and it has its own Wikipedia page.

Those old enough to remember it recall snowdrifts covering automobiles and days stuck indoors. (No Internet and for many, no cable television either. How did we survive?)

Lindenhurst Patch asked on Facebook if people remembered the Blizzard of 1978, and here’s what some residents and readers said about it:

Lisa Cregan: "Yes, and once in a lifetime was fine with me."

Sharon Bannon-Guarini: "Yes my husband and I both worked for Con Edison. Made lots of money; called in sick the week after and vacationed in California. A once in a lifetime memory!"

Ann Marie Giannola Safaty: "I most certainly do as that's the year I graduated, and there are pictures in my yearbook of the snow! We were out of school so long they wanted us to graduate in July! Luckily we didn't!"

Phyllis Saporito: "Those were snow storms. What we get today doesn't compare to the storms of years ago."

Kathy Degnan Jordan: "We built a snow slide for our daughter, and she loved it."

Ellen Burkholder Conti: "I'd just started a new job at Doubleday. Two hour drive home (instead of 30 minutes). People stranded on the LIE. No electricity/no heat for a week. That was a big storm!"

Lenora Cori Bufis: "My engagement party was at the VFW off of John Street on February 12. Everyone showed up."

Dot Tressel Lauria: "OMG, yes! Third in NYS for maternity leave. Took 1-1/2 hours to go from East Farmingdale to Melville for my exit interview! Four hours to get to home to Bay Shore. Five days later my son was born two months premature!"
