Police Search for Drugs along Wellwood Avenue

Officials say a known drug dealer in the area tossed something out a car window on Thursday afternoon, causing the police activity on the Wellwood Avenue overpass.

The police activity along the Wellwood Avenue overpass above Sunrise Highway on Thursday afternoon was related to drugs, according to Suffolk Police.

"The COPE sergeant recognized a known drug dealer in the area, and when the seargent went to pull him over, the dealer threw something out of the window," Sgt. David Teufel with the SCPD's First Precinct told Lindenhurst Patch.

"The COPE seargent then had his guys go and search for what was tossed," he continued.

The plain-clothes officers had radios in hand as they walked and searched along the overpass while the COPE sergeant stayed with the suspect further down the road, where the suspect finally pulled over.

One eyewitness observed an unmarked car searching along with the officers, but Teufel wasn't sure if the car was marked or unmarked.

Unfortunately, the officers, after a thorough search along Wellwood on August 9, weren't able to find what was tossed from the suspect's window, and the suspect wasn't arrested, Teufel said.
