'Pups & Pumpkins' Babylon Shelter Adoption Event Takes Place Saturday
The shelter is near capacity of adoptable animals and is in desperate need of supplies

AMITYVILLE, NY — The Town of Babylon Animal Shelter hosting a fall-themed adoption event, to help available animals in need.
"Pups & Pumpkins" will take place on Saturday, Nov. 4 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., located at 80 New Hwy in Amityville.
Christine Franke, senior volunteer, told Patch the shelter has been full for some time.

"If you're considering adopting, come on down and take a look, we are hoping to bring awareness to the community of the many animals in need of homes," she said.
The shelter has a total of 60 kennels: 44 kennels in its main dog room; eight in another section; and eight in their small dog room.

As of Wednesday, 55 dogs reside at the shelter.
It also currently houses 150 cats, and about 30 rabbits.
"Not only our shelter, but many rescues are just all really struggling right now," Franke said. "This is a great time to adopt."

All are invited to also participate in raffles, featuring basket giveaways from local businesses. A bake sale and merchandise will also be available.
Franke also said the shelter is always in need of supplies, such as "busy bones", non-down comforters, toys, and anything on its Amazon Wishlist.
With such a large amount of animals, the number of shelter volunteers and fosters are dire, too.
"The shelter is different from walking a dog in a park," she said. "At the shelter, they (dogs) only get out (from their kennels to exercise) 15 to 30 minutes a day. It's very stressful when it's full."

Fostering also help animals become adopted faster, as they become acclimated to house-living.
"It takes time to go from a shelter setting into a home setting," Franke said. "It takes like a little bit of a transition. So we're always looking for fosters."
