Teen Killed, Struck By 2 Cars While Crossing Copiague Street: Police

The 15-year-old was lying in the roadway when he was struck by another driver, who fled, police said.

COPIAGUE, NY — A teenager is dead after they were struck by two cars in a hit-and-run crash in Copiague on Thursday, Suffolk County Police said.

Amir Porterfield, 15, of Copiague, was walking at the crosswalk on eastbound Sunrise Highway at 35th Street at about 7 p.m.when he was struck by a 1999 Subaru.

Porterfield was lying in the roadway and was struck by another driver, who fled.

The teen and the driver of the Subaru were transported to Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip.

Porterfield died from his injuries, police said. The driver of the Subaru was treated for non-
life-threatening injuries, police said.

The Subaru was impounded for a safety check. Detectives are asking anyone with information on the crash to call the Major Case Unit at 631-852- 6553 or call anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.

Copiague School District Superintendent Dr. Kathleen Bannon sent a letter to families, addressing Porterfield's death.

"It is with a heavy heart that I share this information with you. Last evening, our high school
suffered a terrible loss with the tragic passing of freshman Amir Porterfield. We extend our
deepest condolences to Amir’s family and friends during this difficult time," she wrote.

Bannon also noted that all district counselors and psychologists are available for grief counseling.

"The loss of a child is always heartbreaking and can deeply impact our students. Our high school
has a dedicated support team who are equipped to assist both students and staff during such
challenging moments," Bannon said. "This is a difficult time for our community, and we must come together to support one another in our grief."
