Six months after Hurricane Sandy tore into the East side of the Charles J. Cowan Marina (Lindenhurst Docks), plans to repair the damage are moving forward.
Currently the Village is looking to first repair the damage on the West side where a small section of boardwalk connecting the sidewalk next to Chateau La Mer to the rest of the boardwalk was ripped away by Sandy.
"We're trying to in the next week or so to get that work done," Village Administrator Shawn Cullinane told Lindenhurst Patch on Wednesday.
"We're also looking at getting some temporary planking down on the East side so the Lindenhurst Fire Department can get its boat into the water and access it," Cullinane said.
In addition some minor repair work to the LFD's floating dock needs to be done in tandem with that, he said.
About a month ago the Village opened the Docks for limited foot and car traffic during the day only - 7 a.m. to dusk every day - since there's still no electric - or plumbing on the East side - thanks to the October 29 superstorm.
However, Cullinane said the Village met with LIPA last week , and was meeting this week with its own engineer to get some overhead lighting restored.
That way the Marina could be open at night.
"Then we'd be able to have a dock master and open it at night - till maybe midnight," he said.
The dock master building, however, still has no electric, but the plumbing seems to be okay, Cullinane said.
The Village also would like to open the baths in that building to the public, but there's no timeline for when that would be completed as it's a work in progress.
"We'd like to get it open and operating as soon as possible, and then in the longer term look at how we can renovate it since nothing's been done since it was built in the 1970s," Cullinane said.
This is all in an effort to restore the Marina to some normalcy as the Village wades through the process to repair the larger damage to the East side where Sandy ripped out the boardwalk, electric and gas.
That damage has prevented any usage of the boat slips it usually rents out. No boats - save for the LFD's - will be put in the water at the Docks this year.
In the meantime residents can enjoy the Docks every day from 7 a.m. to dusk as repairs begin to move forward.
