Village 'Ready to Go' Ahead of Noreaster

Lindenhurst officials say the highway department is prepped for snow removal ahead of the impending blizzard, and urge residents to stay off the roads and remove their cars from the streets.

The Village of Lindenhurst spent Thursday preparing the Department of Public Works (DPW) for the impending Noreaster that forced the National Weather Service to issue a blizzard warning and a coastal flood advisory.

"The Village is ready to go," Ray Fais, emergency manager for the Village, told Lindenhurst Patch.

"The trucks are equipped with snow plows, and they're loaded with salt and sand," he said.

Blizzard Conditions
The blizzard warning is in effect from Friday morning into Saturday afternoon, but during the early part of the day, Fais said there's a possibility of an inch of snow.

It's later in the day on Friday and overnight into Saturday that the increased snowfall amounts - upwards of 10 inches to 15 inches, with locally higher amounts totalling 16 to 18 inches - are forecast.

As such Fais said the Village is continuing to monitor the storm, and depending on the track and the snowfall amount, will make the decision to start sending crews out earlier or later as needed to remove snow.

"Snow totals could change, but I think the higher totals will be farther out East," he said, adding if the timing of the storm is as experts forecast, then by late afternoon Lindenhurst will be in blizzard conditions, with the storm "waning off" in the overnight hours.

And blizzard conditions, according to the NWS, mean the following conditions during a period of three or more hours: sustained winds or frequent gusts to 35 miles per hour or higher with considerable blowing and/or falling snow that frequently reduces visibility to less than a 1/4 of a mile.

Stay Safe
Given that scenario the Village is urging residents to be safe.

"Stay off the roads," Village Administrator Shawn Cullinane said. "And residents should also remove their cars from the streets so the plows can move the snow."

Cullinane said if residents have an emergency during the storm, then they should call 911. And for non-emergency, snow-related issues they could call the DPW at 631-957-7520.

Residents should also call the DPW at that number if there are downed trees or tree limbs, he added.

Coastal Flood Advisory
The NWS also issued a coastal flood advisory for Southwest Suffolk County. It warns against two- to three-foot higher tides and waves nine to 13 feet along beaches facing the Atlantic Ocean.

Here in Lindenhurst there'll be "minor coastal flooding," according to Fais, as opposed to what Hurricane Sandy wrought on residents living South of Montauk Highway in October.

"We'll get what we normally would get, water in the streets where we usually do," Fais said.
