West Gates Has 'Magical' Reading Experience

The Reading Is Magical theme is displayed throughout the sLindenhurst elementary school with magic wands on the ceilings, magic hands and hats by the fish tank and stars detailing the books read by students.

West Gates Elementary School held its annual Parents as Reading Partners (PARP) program with the theme Reading Is Magical.

During the two-week program students were asked to read at least 15 minutes a night for five nights.

Students participated in events such as a bookmark contest, a competition by grade for the most minutes read and a book swap.

The books collected were divided into three categories: primary, early chapter and chapter. Students “swapped” their books with other students and received back the number and category of books they brought in.

The scheduled Book Bingo event was canceled because of the blizzard, but other PARP events included Community Readers, during which prominent members of the community came to read books to classes during their library period.

Superintendent Richard Nathan read Ms. Malarkey - Leaves No Reader Behind to Gregg Fiori’s third-grade students.

Other readers included Assistant Superintendent Dr. Shari Camhi and New York State Assemblyman Bob Sweeney.

The closing ceremony was Holly Rock entertainment, a live game show with music, lighting and friendly competition.

The Reading Is Magical theme was displayed throughout the school with magic wands on the ceilings, magic hands and hats by the fish tank and stars detailing the books read by students.

The West Gates family congratulated Maria Kalish, Theresa Silver and the entire PARP committee for making this year’s events a success.
