9/11 Memorials, School Board Meeting on Tap

Here's what's going on in Long Beach this week.
- Schools Open: The Long Beach School District will open its doors at of its buildings for the first day of classes Monday.
- BOE Meets: The Long Beach Board of Education will hold a regular meeting at the newly rebuilt West School, at 91 Maryland Ave., at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. School officials will hold a brief ceremony prior to the meeting to celebrate the reopening of the Hurricane Sandy-battered elementary school.
- Sept. 11 Ceremonies: Long Beach on Wednesday remembers the victims of the Al-Qaeda terrorist attacks twelve years ago at two ceremonies: a 9/11 Remembrance Gathering at the Recreation Center Parking lot, at Magnolia Boulevard and West Bay Drive, at 8 a.m., and a LBFD 9/11 Memorial at the 400 Block of West Park Ave. at 7:30 p.m.
- Green Thumbs Unite: Larry Gordon, landscape and horticultural consultant, will conduct a public forum at the Long Beach Library, at 111 W. Park Ave., to help homeowners bring back and further beautify their properties starting at 2 p.m. Wednesday. The forum is titled: “How Can We Enhance Our Gardens Without Spending a Penny?”
- Yom Kippur: The Jewish Holiday of Yom Kippur starts Friday evening. Long Beach City Hall, Magnolia Senior Center and the Rec Center will be closed all day Friday.
