In Wake Of Apparent Shark Bite At Jones Beach, Increased Patrols: Officials
While common sense is urged in the water: "We will do everything to keep you safe," Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman says.
LIDO BEACH, NY — In wake of an apparent shark bite at Jones Beach last week, Nassau County officials are reminding residents to use common sense over the holiday weekend.
A 20-year-old woman was waist deep in water on Wednesday afternoon at the Central Mall beachfront when she was bitten on her leg and foot, New York State Parks said.
"We are increasing our patrols on the ocean, as we do every summer," Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman said on Monday.

Helicopters and drones will check for any shark activity.
While Blakeman said sharks don't typically come close to the shore. "In case they do, we want you take some precautions."

One of those safety measures, he said, is only swimming where a lifeguard is stationed.
Additionally, he advised: "Go swimming with a buddy." . It's also important to avoid swimming after dusk when "sharks are very actively feeding."
But, with the resources are the county's disposal, including the beach patrol: "We will do everything to keep you safe," Blakeman said.
