L.B. Resident Wins Radio Stint on WFAN

Move over Mike Francesa, there’s a new sports enthusiast from Long Beach about to get behind a microphone at WFAN.

Adrahtas was among six contestants at a bar in New Jersey last Friday who got behind a microphone to give a monologue and take a listener’s call. Their performances were evaluated by three judges, including former New York Giants running back Tiki Barber and past Phenom winner John Jastremski (2011), and voted on by the listeners. Adrahtas wracked up 39 percent of the votes.

During the contest, Adrahtas answered a call about prospects for the Mets’ 2014 season and his commentary centered on steroids in Major League Baseball. On Monday, a vacationing Francesa, a former Long Beach resident who hosts the afternoon show on WFAN, called into his show to announce the winner.

He said of Adrahtas: “[H]e did a very good job, as did most of the contestants. They really have raised the bar dramatically.”

Adrahtas told Evan Roberts and Joe Beningo, the morning hosts who filled in for Francesa, that he is a Mets, Nets, Giants and Islanders fan, and that he is “psyched” about his new gig. “I can’t wait to get going,” he added. “It’s the opportunity of a lifetime. It’s surreal.”

Adrhatas is a history and special education teacher and a head varsity soccer and girls varsity softball coach at Valley Stream South High School. Asked if he may leave his job if, after a year, WFAN offers him his own radio show, Adrhatas said:

“This is a dream and I’m prepared to chase it. I think as a teacher, as a coach, the two careers could balance together for a while, and I’ll cross that bridge when I get to it.”
